A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Amy Levin, founder of the fabulous website College Fashionista, through one of our mutual friends (Hi Marissa!).  We bonded over managing blogs/websites and a love for all things sweet.  She mentioned collaborating on a post that would feature desserts inspired by fashion trends, and I was totally on board from the get-go.  Although I don’t consider myself a true fashionista, I do love reading fashion blogs and pretending like I’m trendy from time to time.  New York Fashion Week for Spring 2014 took place last month just a few blocks from my apartment, and once Amy and her team analyzed the trends, she sent me a list as inspiration for desserts.  I ended up making three desserts that CF will feature this week on their website and Facebook page, but I also wanted to tell you all about them here too.  Among a list of exciting trends, I was immediately drawn to the use of pastels.  So first up here you have it – a pastel cupcake decorating party to celebrate the pastel trend from NYFW!

Since College Fashionista is aimed for college students, I tried to keep the recipe simple with minimal ingredients that could all be put together in a dorm kitchen.  Nothing too fancy or elaborate here!  I made the cupcakes and frosting ahead of time and decorated my dining table for a perfectly frilly and colorful cupcake decorating party.  With all the warm colors of fall, this Easter-y palate may seem a little out of place, but I found it very refreshing, and apparently pastels are in for fall too!  In addition to tinted buttercream, I also stocked up on pastel candies from Dylan’s Candy Bar that were really fun.  I taught the girls how to do a two-toned frosting technique that made for some really beautiful cupcakes, especially when displayed all together.  We had a lot of fun and I think this would be such a great idea for a group of girlfriends of any age – from little ones to college girls to those of us wishing we were still in college, haha.  And if you use pastels too you can be fashionistas just like us!

For more photos, the recipe, and instructions on the two-toned frosting technique, head over to College Fashionista!  And be sure to follow them on Facebook to see our other two fashionable desserts coming up later in the week (hint: it involves an addicting popcorn recipe and lots of chocolate!).  Thanks Amy and Sammy for being so great to work with, and to Marissa and Katie for joining our cupcake decorating party.  I never imagined myself being featured on a fashion blog, but it doesn’t surprise me that my cupcakes made the cut :)
